My work typically resides in a series of contexts through several phases. Perhaps originating as an initiated action with objects, props or costumes– perhaps in a wilderness area , on suburban streets, or within squatter community–

When I choose to place an elaborately made or technologically laden work miles into a desert wilderness, and there serve whoever happens along ice cream– the experience is unexpected and unnatural. I do not fabricate or encode these conditions—desire for water in that desert will assert its dominance over the superficiality of craving hi-tech ice cream. Content emerges from environment coupled to a relational action and object.

Actions spawn documentation–large-scale digital panoramic images, which along with artifacts and re-fabrications migrate to museums and blogs. The final form of most projects is an archive of transcripts, objects and photo-documentation recording events, sites, and participants–these collectively form a narrative and a collectively authored mythology.

If I must have My Mr. Coffee pot, my laptop, my tens and twenties of devices with me…then traversing the continental divide on foot will be made more treacherous and will require manipulating others into my service. This reveals for scrutiny social structures of privilege and associated cultural values. Consequently my artistic methodology becomes dependent on wilderness to assure the artistic gestures have meaning and not merely contrivance
